"Well folks, there is a leak in the co-pilots window and rain is coming in so we're going to have to go back to the gate and have it looked at" the pilot stated. I wondered if they would have noticed the leak if it wasn't raining. "I think it will be a fairly quick fix...." he stated assuredly.
Five hours later, we're still waiting at the airport gate. My littlest already had the nap that was supposed to make the first flight go so much smoother. I can't believe it takes 5 hours to fix a window....did they have to take apart and reassemble the entire cockpit? We even had to pay for those little tidbits of lunch scraps they sell on-board. Captive passengers seek food.... you'd think they could give us a freebie for having to wait so long.
When we finally departed for San Juan, we knew we were in serious risk of missing our connecting flight once we landed. So, upon arrival, they whizzed us to our waiting connecting flight with no time to spare. Our plan to have a leisurely dinner in San Juan was nixed. Rapid decrease in food supply = exponential increase in family crabbiness. Good times.
While we did get to see the Caribbean sunset on the plane, we arrived in Grenada after 9 pm sans 2 pieces of luggage that decided to get lost somewhere in San Juan. Of course, Grenada was having a holiday and after we went through immigration and cleared customs, it was 11 pm with no hope of finding anything open. No food once again.
Our car was waiting for us (Nedds Rentals is awesome by the way) in the spooky airport lot and we drove home in a starving haze. As we walked in our dark front door, I saw curious shadows out of the corner of my eye. I stopped to focus and the floor appeared to be moving. Lights turned on revealed a variety of unwelcome creepy crawlies, the overwhelming majority being a mass of millipedes with an occasional centipede mixed in to really freak us out.
After we inhaled some fruit leather and cashews scrounged from our remaining luggage (while sitting on top of the relative safety of our kitchen table) we spent the next hour sweeping up multi-legged nastiness and cleaning the house so we could put the kids to bed with some semblance of bug-free normalcy.
Welcome back to Grenada.
