Tis the Season

Our first term in Grenada was during the dry season, which consisted of maybe a 10 minute rain shower once or twice a week. The temperatures were comfortable and the humidity was very bearable. No bugs and well, life was very nice, pleasant, and predictable.

Enter the rainy season. Entire days are just a blur of wetness and unbearable heat. Laundry can not be done because it gets drenched on the line (we don't have a clothes dryer). All the towels, clothes, and really, any fabric take on a musty smell. The rain breeds critters as well, so our little place is just inundated with a daily dose of millipedes, mosquitoes, gnats, ants, and biting flies. Our poor little munchkins are just covered in itchy welts so we've taken to putting them to bed in full jammies with their feet sprayed with repellant. The humidity compounds our overheated scratchy misery and since the kids are spending more time inside, their craziness is just stoked on autopilot.

If you can't beat em, join em.

So, today, we spent almost the entire day outside, wet, sloggy, and squishy. The rain was embraced, leaves were floated in mini-ponds, puddles were run through, and downspouts were an endless source of enjoyment for all of us. I think parents can attest that one of the great things about having kids is being able to be one for a while.

Our boys thought so too. For the first night since we arrived, they fell asleep, happily worn out and peaceful.
